James Patrick Bushnell

Jim loved to drive fast. After trying out his classic 1979 Porsche 911 SC at the Bremerton Speedway, he became an avid amateur race car driver. He turned his Porsche into a dedicated racing machine, fully loaded with safety equipment. On April 23rd, 2022 Jim had his final race, ending with a crash he did not survive.

The fourth of six children, he was born in Olympia, Washington on St. Patrick's Day, thus the name. Jim was a much beloved son and brother. Always playful and easygoing, he was our perfect playmate. He grew into a generous, kind, and loving uncle, husband, friend, and professional engineer. As both a youngster and throughout life, Jim enjoyed camping, hiking, skiing, and a bit of mountain climbing. After college he met Ray, the love of his life. They married and lived in Seattle.

Jim attended St. Michael's School and graduated from Olympia High School in 1977 where he learned the basics of chemistry from Mr. Challen, a favorite teacher. He received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington. Jim's work career focused on safety training, a specialty that served him well as he continuously rebuilt his race car. Over four decades as a chemical engineer, he worked for the Navy, CH2M Hill, and finally at the University of Washington.

Beyond fast driving, Jim is remembered for his love of family, singing with gusto, and a quirky sense of style. He was a bonding force for his many relatives and made frequent visits to family elders and youth. He made us all feel loved and cherished. Jim relished being an uncle to his twelve nieces and nephews and strove to fulfill the perfect granduncle role to the youngest generation. The singalongs he led with Ray were a fixture at family gatherings, Seabeck Conference Center, and University Unitarian Church. He aspired to emulate Brian May with his guitar playing and hair style but the tie-dyed socks were all Jim!

Preceded by his parents John and Violet Bushnell of Olympia. Survived by his spouse, Ray Gruenewald, and siblings Jerome Bushnell, Jeanette Bushnell, David Bushnell, Richard Bushnell, and Sandra Bushnell Straughan.

A celebration of Jim's life will be held Saturday, July 30, 2:00 pm at the University Unitarian Church, 6556 35th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115. His ashes will be interred at Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma, Washington alongside his parents and extended family.
